These ancient party barges were advanced for their time and very luxurious. They contained full baths, marble statues, mosaic flooring, plumbing, heating, and gardens. Even after their deliberate sinking, following the death of famously despised Emperor Caligula, their location was never forgotten. Many attempted excavations over the centuries partially damaged the ships. That is until the Italian government finally recovered the party boats in 1929 by partially draining Lake Nemi through a network of ancient roman water channels. Unfortunately, the ships were destroyed in 1944 during World War 2 from artillery fire. But there is some reason to think that more than two ships were constructed. Recently a marble statue was found in Lake Nemi, suggested to be a remnant of the party ships. Some believe there is a third, larger party barge in the deepest part of the lake which was never fully drained and has yet to be explored. But after the destruction of the first two, it's worth questioning whether it should be recovered at all if it does exist.
